This 1985 record from Concord Jazz has been one of my favorite Benny Carter albums or a long time. Gene Harris tends to steal the show but the ensemble playing is fun and swinging throughout. Clayton gets some time in the spot light with a few written out solos as well as some great improvised one. Buyer beware: His 8-measure solo on Lover Man is extremely difficult and thus it’s admittedly one of my worst transcription jobs to date. Do you best and be kind to your pal, Mike Benning, he tries his best. The listener can easily hear Clayton’s influence from the late, great Ray Brown. It’s no surprise that Christian McBride, Clayton and Brown made up the “Super Bass” Group from the late 90’s as they all have the best bass lines and the best feel. I hope you enjoy playing along to this spectacular album.

Some other recordings with musicians that I was lucky enough to record with over the years.
