From the introduction: “The purpose of this etude book is to give the aspiring bassist access to both simple yet effective, and creatively difficult ideas when improvising solos with a bow in the jazz style. The book will follow a distinct pattern:

1. Fingerings for the major scales

2. A simple variation on the major scale (which can be played in any key)

3. Traditional-style etudes in a particular key that are meant to played with straight eighths (quavers) unless otherwise noted

4. Real, commonly played songs and transcriptions of my own solos I have played over them. These should be assumed swung eighth notes unless otherwise noted.
