This is probably the least well known album I’ve ever really dug into. Meredith Wilson (1902-1984, Most famous for writing “The Music Man“ ) composed each song that would be arranged by Hank Jones for this date. It’s easily one of the most creative quartet albums I’ve come across, with lots of interesting contrapuntal lines and harmonies. It’s relatively short, the average song length is about 3 minutes - yet each tune brings a unique voice to the whole record. Milt Hinton really shines along side Elvin Jones and Kenny Burrell. This one is definitely for hardcore jazz fans. But, as always, playing alongside is what has shaped my playing and I hope it will shape yours as well.
