Oscar Pettiford Bass Part Transcription
Oscar Pettiford Bass Part Transcription
Oscar Pettiford’s bass lines and solos on 6 of 8 tracks fully transcribed from the 1954 album: Oscar Pettiford Sextet
The quintessential bebop bassist is featured on this album alongside drummer Max Roach as well as some lesser known French jazz artists. As was common through the mid-century. Tracks and albums would be rereleased on other labels often with alternate takes or other compositions, hence why only 6 of 8 tracks were transcribed here - the other two being alt. takes of E-Lag and Burt’s Pad. OP is in fine form throughout this whole date. Though his solos are short - never more than a chorus (save for a very small amount of trading on the first track) - they always exhibit the essence of a bebop bass solo complete with chromaticism and smooth accessible lines, economically perfect for the left hand. This is a great album/transcription for those wanting only a mild challenge or want to understand the bop language better.
