This live date from New York’s famed Blue Note Club sets the backdrop for this outstanding trio date. Alongside his usual cohorts of the time, Gene Harris on piano and Mickey Roker on drums, Ray is in excellent form as usual. There are more intonation issues than we are used to hearing from the Godfather of modern bass playing, but some of that may be due to the piano being slightly sharp. Meditation, in particular has some amazing lines from Ray but also some moments where quartertones can be heard. “That’s All” and “Love Me Tender” are some ballads with some blistering bass runs that purchasers of this product may have difficulty getting though (much as I did transcribing them). Regardless, there is much to enjoy on this album and I hope you enjoy playing along with the greatest of the greats.
