Ray Brown, universally regarded as the pinnacle of jazz bass playing, continues to amaze me after 2+ decades of listening and transcribing his work. This particular outing from 1964 features The classic Oscar Peterson Trio with Ed Thigpen on drums bringing passion, soul, and excitement to some of the most famous songs of the mid 20th century. Though Ray has fewer solos on this album than most, his feel is the highlight on such tracks as Corcovado, Have You Met Miss Jones, and the swing-iest of blues tunes, D&E. Those trying to capture what makes a bass line feel great would do well to emulate Ray’s lines and memorize his licks and tropes.

Some other recordings with musicians that I was lucky enough to record with over the years.
