Sam Jones is stellar in this Riverside outing from pianist/bandleader Bobby Timmons. Timmons worked extensively with Art Blakey and where he honed the hard bop style. Jimmy Cobb is predictably in excellent form as well. I chose this record in part because Jones’ gut strings (which I use as well) come through with great clarity on the recording. Jones has two solos on the eight songs he plays (Lush Life is a solo piano feature) and Dat Dere is an especially great chorus of bebop chops. The Groove with Cobb is always swinging making this a great trio album to play along to. The final tune, a burner entitled Joy Ride penned by Timmons features the ensemble swinging at ~300bpm.
