This is a great introduction into playing along side records. Along with the Joe Williams album available on this site, the bass lines are clear, accurate and not particularly difficult. Tommy Potter, while never achieving the same level of fame as his peers, made a name for himself playing with the giants of bebop in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s playing alongside Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and others. Those recordings are either difficult to find and/or were of poor recording quality to the point the bass is nearly inaudible (not to mention the blistering tempos many songs were played at). This album stays true to the mellow mood as most songs are under 120bpm. Potter only takes one solo the lone uptempo number “Jes’ Fine” but it’s well done and worth learning from. Roy Haynes is more mild mannered than usual, but in perfect form nonetheless. Bass players of all age and talent ranges can benefit from Potter’s playing.

Some other recordings with musicians that I was lucky enough to record with over the years.
